TENSION IN KANO AS KWANKWASO, GAWUNA NEAR ADC DEFECTION; DEPUTY GOVERNOR RESIGNS πŸ”₯

Kano State’s political landscape is heating up amid growing speculation that the National Leader of the Rabiu Kwankwaso-led New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) may defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that could reshape opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reports indicate that talks are intensifying about a possible opposition alliance as Kwankwaso is widely expected to formally join the ADC soon, following consultations with other opposition figures.

The anticipated move has unsettled key political camps in Kano, including supporters of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC). There are also indications that former APC governorship candidate Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna may align with Kwankwaso in the ADC, further signaling potential shifts in political alliances.

Analysts say such defections could significantly impact the balance of power in Nigeria’s political scene as the 2027 elections approach. Amid the uncertainty, Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has resigned from office. A statement by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement described the resignation as a difficult but necessary step taken in the interest of governance stability and to allow the office to function optimally.

The statement also noted that the resignation does not imply any admission of allegations previously raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly. Political commentators believe the resignations and potential defections reflect broader strategic realignments among Nigeria’s opposition figures as they seek to build a stronger coalition capable of challenging the ruling party in upcoming elections.
