SOUTHEAST GROUP CALLS FOR CLARITY ON SHARIA–COMMON LAW FRAMEWORK IN NIGERIA

An Igbo socio-political organisation has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to address what it described as lingering ambiguity between Sharia law and the country’s common law system. In a statement released on 27 February 2026, the group expressed concern over what it termed inconsistencies in the interpretation and application of Nigeria’s dual legal framework. According to the organisation, the situation continues to generate constitutional debates and public tension in parts of the country.Nigeria operates a plural legal system that includes statutory (common) law, customary law, and Sharia law — the latter primarily applied in personal and civil matters in several northern states. The group argued that clearer constitutional guidance and enforcement mechanisms are needed to prevent misunderstandings and ensure equal protection of citizens under the law. They called on the National Assembly, judicial authorities, and relevant constitutional bodies to initiate a review process aimed at strengthening legal clarity, promoting national unity, and safeguarding fundamental rights. As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from federal authorities.
