SHEIKH GUMI CHALLENGES U.S. TO BUILD SCHOOLS, NOT DROP BOMBS

Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has publicly challenged the United States government, urging it to invest in schools and community amenities for herders rather than using expensive military weapons in Nigeria’s north-west.

➡️ Gumi’s comments came after a viral video showed a Fulani man finding a missile barrel in a field following recent U.S. airstrikes. He argued that many herders lack basic awareness of the dangers of unexploded ordnance and need education, not bombardment.

In a Facebook post cited by multiple media, Gumi wrote:“Most herdsmen need deliverance from ignorance … That’s why I built a school for them. Instead of dropping a $2m bomb that can build schools and amenities for them.” ABOUT THE U.S. AIRSTRIKES📌 On Christmas Day (Dec. 25, 2025), the U.S. military, acting in coordination with the Nigerian government and at the request of President Bola Tinubu, carried out airstrikes in Sokoto State targeting ISIS-linked militants and Lakurawa extremist camps.

🇺🇸 Nigerian officials said intelligence indicated an influx of foreign fighters from the Sahel, prompting the joint action. Nigerian authorities noted the strikes were intended to degrade the operational capabilities of these groups and enhance security in the region. 👥 There are mixed reports on civilian impact — local residents reported intense explosions and panic from shaking homes, though official sources stated there were no confirmed civilian casualties.

CONTEXT & REACTIONS

Gumi’s stance has sparked debate online, with some critics accusing him of downplaying terrorism and opposing needed security actions. Some analysts suggest that investing in education, pastoral support, and socioeconomic development could address long-term insecurity roots, while military action may only provide short-term suppression. Civil society groups have also raised concerns about national sovereignty and transparency around foreign military involvement.
