MILITARY GOING THROUGH PROBE AFTER AIRSTRIKE KILLS CIVILIANS
Dozens Feared Dead in Borno–Yobe Border Market Strike.
The Nigerian military is facing fresh scrutiny following a deadly airstrike that reportedly hit a weekly market at Jilli, along the Borno–Yobe border, leaving dozens of civilians feared dead.
The incident, which occurred during active trading hours, has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over civilian safety in ongoing counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria’s North-East.
Market Targeted in Anti-Terror Operation Local sources say the airstrike was aimed at suspected Boko Haram fighters who were believed to have gathered in the area.
However, eyewitness accounts suggest that the operation may have missed its intended targets, resulting in significant civilian casualties.
Residents described a chaotic scene as multiple explosions rocked the market while traders and buyers were still conducting business. One eyewitness said the attack occurred around 2:46 p.m., adding that several fighter jets were involved in the operation.
Reports from the ground indicate that bodies were recovered in large numbers, with some locals claiming over 30 deaths, while others believe the toll could be higher.
Casualties Taken to Hospitals
Victims of the strike were rushed to medical facilities in Geidam and Damaturu, where several of the injured were treated. Some reportedly died while receiving care, further increasing the casualty count.
Military and Government React
The Nigerian Air Force, operating under Operation Hadin Kai, has acknowledged reports of the incident and confirmed that an investigation is currently underway. However, no official casualty figure has been released.
Authorities maintain that the targeted location was a known insurgent stronghold used by Boko Haram elements.
Babagana Zulum stated that the Jilli market had been officially closed years ago due to security concerns, although trading activities reportedly continued in the area.
Similarly, the Yobe State Governmentconfirmed that the operation targeted insurgent enclaves but admitted that civilians may have been affected during the strike.
Political Reactions
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the incident, describing it as a tragic error and calling for accountability and transparency in military operations.
Growing Concerns
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the increasing risk of civilian casualties in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaigns, especially in areas where insurgents are believed to among civilian populations.
Investigations are ongoing as pressure mounts on military authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the strike.
