BREAKING: NIGERIA THROWN INTO DARKNESS AS NATIONAL GRID COLLAPSES

Several parts of Nigeria were thrown into darkness on Monday after the nation’s national electricity grid collapsed in a major system disturbance, cutting power supply across the country and leaving millions without electricity. According to distribution load data released on social media by grid operators, the overall supply to electricity distribution companies (DisCos) plunged sharply in the afternoon. At about 3:12 p.m., only Ibadan DisCo (30MW) and Abuja DisCo (20MW) had any power allocation, while major operators in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, Enugu and other regions recorded zero megawatts. Before the collapse, power generation had briefly peaked earlier in the day at over 4,000MW, only to crash within hours to minimal output levels. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the grid disturbance in a statement, saying that multiple generating units and critical transmission lines tripped, which caused the widespread outage. Efforts to stabilise and restore the grid were immediately launched. In addition to causing darkness in homes and businesses, the collapse added fresh pressure to Nigeria’s already fragile power infrastructure, which has struggled with gas supply issues and recurrent disruptions throughout 2025. Grid operators, government officials, and technical teams are currently investigating the root causes of the collapse and have vowed to implement corrective measures to avert future occurrence.
