FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AFFIRMS NIGERIA’S STRUCTURED SECURITY COOPERATION WITH THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER GLOBAL PARTNERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM

On Friday, the Federal Government reaffirmed that Nigeria remains actively engaged in structured and strategic security cooperation with international allies, including the United States, to confront terrorism and violent extremism threatening the nation’s stability.
The government stressed that the cooperation is built on intelligence sharing, tactical planning, and multilateral security frameworks, ensuring that operations targeting extremist networks are conducted with precision and limited civilian risk.
Nigeria also maintained that such alliances are coordinated under Nigeria’s defense priorities, with national sovereignty remaining the guiding principle for all foreign military collaboration.
The statement comes amid public debates and mixed reactions surrounding U.S.-backed counter-terror operations in the Sahel and West Africa. However, authorities insist that Nigeria’s engagement is not ideological, but strategic — focused on weakening terror factions and preventing foreign extremist footholds in the region.
Nigeria’s defense leadership continues to emphasize that security cooperation does not replace local military authority, but strengthens Nigeria’s capacity to neutralize terror threats through global partnerships and strategic alignment.
